However, definitions in business essays have distinct characteristics. These characteristics imply straightforwardness. Also, definitions can be used in the essay according to how you, as the writer, structure your thoughts.
There are three commonly used definitions in writing business essays, these are:
- Genus-species definition
In writing business essays, this calls upon the broad term that needs to be defined by another example. Usually, this uses differentiation to define the main term.
Example:
Business is a systematic process based on evidences, in contradistinction to an enterprise, where a systematic process is relative to the situation.
In the example above, the writer wants to give distinction to business compared to the enterprise though the enterprise is part of business. The emphasis of the genus-species is the giving of differentiation in the essay. When this principle is applied to a business essay the technique works by giving a definition to a term that in turn distinguishes and qualifies another term.
- Definition by the use of synonyms
Synonyms are words with the same meaning. Mainly, this technique of definition is used to give simpler words to complicated terms in the business essay. A well-written business essay must be understandable by the general readers. Thus, when you write your business essay, you must be able to translate some terms into simpler ones so that your readers can easily “buy your ideas,” so to speak.
- Definition by the use of illustration
Illustrations are examples. Illustrations are used to visualise the concepts in your business essay.
For example:
Good business ethics can be best exemplified by ABC Corporation.
In the example, the standards for good business ethics are gauged on how the ABC Corporation works.
In the business essay, you must be very cautious in giving examples since these are determinative on the progression and overall quality of your discussion.
All in all, before using any techniques in definition, you must be aware of your purpose and goal. The right techniques in definition are mainly dependent on how you frame, phrase and structure your business essay.
