Business essays must be written clearly. Clarity in business essays is mainly dependent on the flow of thoughts and simplicity of presentation. Clarity can be best achieved if your readers are able to know what you are really talking about. Thus, the use of definition is necessary to give the readers the cue of the substance of your business essay. Unfortunately, not all writers are predisposed to defining their subject. For example, if you have a subject having a word business, how do you create your ideas thereon? There are a lot of principles, theories, ideas and practices that revolve around business. So how can you write them in your business essay?
If you tend to write ideas as they appear on your mind, then you are just writing a useless business essay. The use of definition is necessary so that you can have a clue on how to deliver your points in the business essay. In this manner, you can also establish the critical points in your business essay rather than just writing all the ideas that you can think of. Having well explained points in business essays is more preferable than having a lot of ideas without thorough explanation.
There are generally two common ways to define your terms or ideas in the business essay, these are:
- Nominal definition
If you are going to use this in the business essay, a word is defined by the use of a dictionary or other reference materials.
Example:
A business is an occupation, work, or trade in which a person is engaged. (from thefreedictionary.com)
- Real definition
Real definition often reflects the entity, and not the word.
Example:
Business is an affair where you engage into dealings with others.
The difference when applied in the business essay: Can you imagine the word p-r-o-f-i-t when spelled out and can you imagine a real profit? The same goes for both the nominal definition and the real definition. A nominal definition focuses into the word while the real definition focuses on the actual, experienced or observed events or conditions.
There may be a little impact on the use of nominal definition or real definition in your business essay. But you must know that nominal definitions are strictly normative and are not based on the writer’s perspective while real definitions are based on the writer’s perceptions of the same term. Thus, in the case of business essays, nominal definitions are more consistent than real definitions and real definitions are often subjective and biased to the writer’s opinions.
